Brasilien hat sich dazu verpflichtet, die illegale Entwaldung bis 2030 zu stoppen. Die Finanzierung des Schutzes der Wälder und der Artenvielfalt ist daher ein zentraler Bestandteil der brasilianischen Politik. Dennoch gestaltet sich die Umsetzung von wirkungsvollen Wald- und Klimaschutzprojekten aufgrund unzureichender Finanzierung und Kompetenzen für Organisationen und lokale Regierungen schwierig.
Brasilien erhält derzeit einen Großteil der Mittel für Waldschutz basierend auf dem REDD+-Ansatz der Vereinten Nationen. Damit bekommt es Zahlungen, wenn es Treibhausgase aus Entwaldung reduziert. Um auch in Zukunft Wald und Artenvielfalt zu erhalten, muss Brasilien einerseits die Finanzierungsquellen breiter aufstellen und andererseits den Zugang zu den Mitteln und deren Abfluss im Land erhöhen.
Verantwortliche im Waldschutz haben mehr Fähigkeiten, um den Zugang zu und die Höhe von Finanzmitteln zu verbessern.
Das Projekt baut die Kompetenzen von waldschützenden Organisationen sowie Fondsverwaltern aus.
Es berät Bundesstaaten, Kommunen und Dachverbände von indigenen Völkern und lokalen Gemeinschaften darin, Finanzmittel für den Waldschutz zu erhalten und umzusetzen.
Um Prozesse und die nationale, regionale und lokale Zusammenarbeit zu verbessern, unterstützt das Projekt dabei, die nationale REDD+-Strategie zu aktualisieren, Förderrichtlinien anzupassen sowie Austauschformate für Antragsstellende, umsetzende Organisationen und Fondsverwalter aufzusetzen. Gleichzeitig fördert es den Aufbau einer institutionsübergreifenden Koordinations- und Schulungsplattform.
Das Projekt arbeitet zusammen mit der brasilianischen Entwicklungsbank, um die Umsetzung des REDD+-Amazonienfonds als Vorreitermodell für einen partizipativ organisierten, nationalen Fonds für Waldfinanzierung zu optimieren. 

Brazil has committed to stopping illegal deforestation by 2030. Funding to protect forests and biodiversity is therefore an integral part of Brazilian policy. In spite of this, it is difficult for organisations and local governments to implement effective forest protection and climate action projects because of inadequate financing and capacities.
At present, Brazil receives the majority of its funding for forest protection on the basis of the REDD+ approach developed by the United Nations. Under this system, it receives payments if greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation are reduced. To ensure that forests and biodiversity continue to be conserved in the future, Brazil must look further afield for sources of financing and also increase access to the funds and their distribution around the country.
Those responsible for forest protection have a greater ability to improve access to financing and increase the volume of funding.
The project develops the skills of forest protection organisations and those responsible for managing funds.
It advises federal states, local authorities and umbrella organisations for Indigenous Peoples and local communities on how to obtain and use funding to conserve forests.
With the aim of improving processes and national, regional and local collaboration, the project is helping to update the national REDD+ strategy, adapt funding guidelines, and set up dialogue formats for applicants, implementing organisations and those managing the funds. Parallel to this, it is promoting the establishment of a cross-institutional coordination and training platform.
The project is working with the Brazilian Development Bank to optimise implementation of the REDD+ Amazon Fund, which provides a trailblazing model for a participatory, national fund for forest finance.

Financiamento climático e proteção das florestas e biodiversidade são parte central da política brasileira, porém organizações e governos locais enfrentam dificuldades para implementar projetos de proteção florestal e ação climática, devido ao acesso limitado a financiamento e à falta de capacidades técnicas e institucionais. Atualmente, a maior parte dos recursos destinados à proteção das florestas vem de mecanismos como REDD+, desenvolvido no âmbito das Nações Unidas. Assim, o Brasil recebe pagamentos pela redução das emissões causadas pelo desmatamento. Para garantir a conservação contínua das florestas e biodiversidade, o país precisa ampliar, melhorar e facilitar o acesso às fontes de financiamento.
Os responsáveis pela proteção florestal têm maior capacidade de aprimorar o acesso ao financiamento climático e aumentar o acesso à fundos climáticos.
O projeto desenvolve capacidades das organizações de proteção florestal e dos responsáveis pelo gerenciamento de fundos, aconselha estados federais, autoridades locais e organizações guarda-chuva para Povos Indígenas e Povos e Comunidades Tradicionais sobre como obter e usar o financiamento para conservar as florestas. O projeto apoia a atualização da estratégia nacional de REDD+, adaptação das diretrizes de financiamento e estabelece formatos de diálogo para candidatos, organizações de implementação e responsáveis pela gestão dos fundos. Paralelamente, está promovendo o estabelecimento de uma plataforma de treinamento e coordenação interinstitucional.
O projeto trabalha com o Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES) para otimizar a implementação do Fundo Amazônia de REDD+, que oferece um modelo pioneiro para um fundo nacional participativo de financiamento florestal.
