Ausgangssituation
Die Selva Maya umfasst Teile von Belize, Guatemala und Mexiko. Sie ist das größte zusammenhängende tropische Waldgebiet in Mesoamerika und entscheidend für das Klima und die regionale Wasserversorgung.
Allerdings weicht der Wald Flächen für Viehzucht und Landwirtschaft, leidet unter illegalem Holzeinschlag und der Entnahme von Flora und Fauna. Es fehlt bisher an Maßnahmen, um diesen Bedrohungen entgegenzuwirken.


Ziel
Die regionale Zusammenarbeit zum Schutz der Selva Maya ist verbessert: Die Länder setzen Maßnahmen für Wald- und Biodiversitätserhalt um.

Vorgehensweise
Das Projekt hat vier Schwerpunkte:

Es berät Regierungen und Schutzgebietsbehörden in Guatemala, Mexiko und Belize zu Politik- und Monitoringinstrumenten, um die Selva Maya besser zu schützen.
Es berät zuständige Fachbehörden zu Waldbrandbekämpfung, Waldflächenschutz, Maßnahmen gegen die verbotene Entnahme von Flora und Fauna sowie zu klimabedingten Gesundheitsproblemen.
Es baut Partnerschaften mit der Fach- und Ausbildungsorganisationen auf, die die Ansätze zur Wiederherstellung und klimaresistenten Anpassung der Waldlandschaft der Selva Maya umsetzen.
Es arbeitet mit der Privatwirtschaft zusammen, um zusätzliche Mittel für den Wald- und Biodiversitätserhalt zu mobilisieren und unterstützt die Vermarktung von nachhaltigen Produkten aus der Selva Maya durch kleine und mittlere lokale Unternehmen.
Hierfür arbeitet das Projekt mit der Team Europe Initiative „Nachhaltiges Petén – Komponente 2: Wald / Biodiversität", dem Projekt „Selva Maya II" und der Zentralamerikanischen Kommission für Umwelt und Entwicklung (CCAD) des Zentralamerikanischen Integrationssystems (SICA) zusammen. 

Context
The Selva Maya covers parts of Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. It is the largest contiguous area of tropical rainforest in Mesoamerica and is crucial for the climate and the regional water supply.
However, the forest is being cleared for livestock and farming and is suffering the effects of illegal logging and the extraction of flora and fauna. So far, not enough measures exist to counter these threats.

Objective
Regional cooperation to protect the Selva Maya has improved: the countries are implementing forest and biodiversity conservation measures.

Approach
The project focuses on four main areas:
1. It advises governments and conservation area authorities in Guatemala, Mexico and Belize on policy and monitoring tools aimed at providing better protection for the Selva Maya.
2. It advises the relevant authorities on how to deal with forest fires, forest conservation, measures to prevent the prohibited extraction of flora and fauna and climate-related health problems.
3. It builds partnerships with the specialist agencies and training organisations which implement these approaches to restoring the forest landscape of the Selva Maya and adapting it to climate change.
4. It works with the private sector to mobilise additional means for conserving the forest and biodiversity and supports local small and medium-sized business in their efforts to market sustainable products from the Selva Maya.
To this end, the project is collaborating with the Team Europe Initiative "Sustainable Petén – Component 2: Forest/Biodiversity", the Selva Maya II project and the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD) of the Central American Integration System (SICA).
 

Situación de partida
La Selva Maya se extiende por zonas de Belice, Guatemala y México y es considerada como la mayor área continua de bosques tropicales de Mesoamérica, desempeñándo un papel decisivo para la regulación climática y el suministro regional de agua.

Sin embargo, este ecosistema tropical, está perdiendo bosque ante la expansión de la ganadería y la agricultura, y se ve afectado por la tala ilegal y la extracción de fauna y flora. Hasta la fecha no se han tomado suficientes medidas para contrarrestar estas amenazas.

Objetivo
La cooperación regional para proteger la Selva Maya ha mejorado: los países implementan medidas para la conservación y protección de los bosques y la biodiversidad.

Procedimiento
El proyecto consta de cuatro áreas prioritarias:

Asesora a los gobiernos y a las autoridades responsables de las áreas protegidas de Guatemala, México y Belice sobre instrumentos políticos y de seguimiento para proteger de mejor forma la Selva Maya.
Asesora a los organismos sectoriales competentes en materia de lucha contra los incendios forestales, protección de las superficies forestales, medidas contra la extracción ilegal de fauna y flora, así como en el ámbito de problemas de salud relacionados con el clima.
Crea alianzas con organizaciones de formación que implementan medidas de restauración y adaptación resistente al cambio climático del paisaje forestal de la Selva Maya.
Coopera con el sector privado con el fin de movilizar fondos adicionales para la conservación de los bosques y la biodiversidad y apoya la comercialización de productos sostenibles de la Selva Maya por parte de pequeñas y medianas empresas locales.
Para ello, el proyecto "Selva Maya II colabora con la iniciativa del Equipo Europa "Petén más Sostenible – Componente 2: Bosques / Biodiversidad"," y la Comisión Centroamericana de Ambiente y Desarrollo (CCAD) del Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA).
