Ausgangssituation

Kreislaufwirtschaft soll den Wert von Produkten, Materialien und Ressourcen so lange wie möglich erhalten. Sie ist damit ein Gegenentwurf zum derzeitigen linearen Wirtschaftsmodell, in dem Produkte aufwändig hergestellt und nach kurzer Nutzung entsorgt werden. In einem Kreislaufmodell sind Produkte und Materialien von Anfang an so gestaltet, dass sie sich wiederverwenden, reparieren und später weiterverwerten oder effizient recyclen lassen. Dies schont Ressourcen und reduziert Müll. Gleichzeitig entstehen neue, Geschäftsmodelle und Arbeitsplätze.

Ziel

Ansätze für eine Kreislaufwirtschaft sind weltweit verbreitet und finden in ausgewählten Ländern Anwendung.

Vorgehensweise

Das Projekt arbeitet in drei Schwerpunkten:

1.Innovationen fördern: Es berät Unternehmen, Verbände und öffentliche Institutionen, zu innovativen Technologien und Geschäftsmodellen. Zudem fördert es neue Ansätze und Ideen durch Innovationswettbewerbe.
2.Lösungen skalieren: Gemeinsam mit Wirtschaft und Staat verbreitet das Projekt erprobte Lösungen und passt diese auf lokale Kontexte an. Dazu zählen zum Beispiel Geschäftsmodelle, zur Vermeidung von Abfall
3.In globalen Allianzen handeln: Es arbeitet eng mit internationalen Initiativen und Organisationen zusammen und stellt das Sekretariat der „PREVENT Waste Alliance".
Seit April 2025 arbeitet das Projekt gemeinsam mit Expertise France zusätzlich im Auftrag der Europäischen Union (EU). Ziel der „Switch to Circular Economy in East and Southern Africa (SWITCH-2-CE in ESA)" ist die Förderung von Kreislaufwirtschaft in der Region des südlichen und östlichen Afrika.

Context

The circular economy aims to preserve the value of products, materials and resources for as long as possible. It therefore offers an alternative that stands in direct contrast to the current linear economic model in which products are manufactured at considerable expense and then disposed of after a short period of use. In a circular model, products and materials are designed from the outset to be reusable, repairable and later reused or efficiently recycled, thereby conserving resources and reducing waste. At the same time, new business models and jobs are created.

Objective

Circular economy approaches are widespread around the world and are being implemented in selected countries.

Approach

The programme has three priority areas:

1.Promoting innovation: Advising companies, associations and public institutions on innovative technologies and business models. It also promotes new approaches and ideas by holding innovation competitions.
2.Scaling up solutions: Sharing proven solutions and adapting them to local contexts by working with public and private actors. These solutions include business models designed to prevent waste.
3.Action in global alliances: Working closely with international initiatives and organisations and running the secretariat of the PREVENT Waste Alliance.

Since April 2025, the programme has also been working with Expertise France on behalf of the European Union (EU). The Switch to Circular Economy in East and Southern Africa (SWITCH-2-CE in ESA) programme aims to promote circular economies in the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) region.
